About the Opportunity This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., -a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [FEU] The job of Substation Designer (Standards) requires an individual to be self-motivated with an interest and ability to assist in the development of engineering designs, material specifications, and standards development for use by the Substation Design Engineering and Substation Maintenance groups within FirstEnergy. - This position will work within a staff of engineers, designers, drafters and analysts, both internal and external to FirstEnergy, engaged in a wide variety of engineering design activities, from initiation of a request for a standard or specification through conceptual and detailed design development, equipment verification, and record updates. - This position may also provide support to project design staff and all other uses of FirstEnergy substation standards verifying that standards are properly followed and addressing any issues the end users may have. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing designs for transmission and distribution substation standards from concept documents, protection specifications, engineering sketches and / or verbal instructions.
  • Supporting substation standards units in FirstEnergy's estimating and material systems.
  • Preparing 2D drawings, 3D models, and bill of materials for substation standards using Autodesk products such as AutoCAD Electrical and Inventor.
  • Creating layouts, sketches and plans for substation physical equipment. - Evaluating the arrangement and mounting of equipment to ensure compliance with NESC requirements including electrical clearances as well as taking into employee access and maintenance needs and abilities for future expansion.
  • Assisting in the development or revision of substation electrical one-lines, and AC and DC schematics drawings.
  • Developing standard detailed wiring diagrams from schematics.
  • Developing conduit and raceway layouts and cable schedules.
  • Performing design calculations including battery and charger sizing, voltage drop and short circuit calculations, and conduit fill calculations.
  • Assisting engineers with material reviews and prepare approval letters for vendor equipment drawings including large power transformers, high voltage circuit breakers, enclosed high-voltage switchgear, and high voltage capacitor banks.
  • Coordinating with technical personnel to gather and record data for substation design projects and complete as-built and record print revisions from marked drawings
  • Supporting communication across business units regarding project needs
  • Assisting in researching and exploring new technologies that will effectively enable work processes to be automated increasing efficiencies while decreasing the risk of human error.
  • Contributing to a safe environment for substation field personnel, co-workers, contractors, and the public by incorporating a safety by design philosophy into the development and updating of substation standards.
  • Providing support to employees to assist in their learning of standards, procedures, designs, and associated issues and assisting in ensuring standards and equipment specifications are up-to-date and accurate.
  • Assisting FirstEnergy regions during emergencies and storm related activities. - Storm response duties may include time out of the office for extended stays.
  • Supporting and sustaining FirstEnergy as a high performing organization by contributing to excellent organizational performance and values of FirstEnergy through responsible effective work performance.
  • A continuous improvement mindset to better substation standards and processes. Qualifications include:
    • Associate degree in a technical discipline is required. - Consideration will be given to applicants having a minimum of 2 years extensive multi-disciplined technical and operational background in lieu of a college degree.
    • Minimum 0-3 years of related design experience is required.
    • Working knowledge of the Windows operating environment and applicable computer software necessary to fulfill job duties which include: -Microsoft Office 365 and Autodesk products such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical and Inventor or equivalent design and modeling software.
    • Knowledge of drafting principles, techniques and procedures.
    • Experience with file sharing, document management and collaboration tools such as SharePoint.
    • Knowledge of FileNet, WinIGS, Cascade and SAP a plus but not a requirement.
    • Valid driver's license is required. - - - -

    • Must be able to coordinate and prioritize work on multiple assignments and be able to work effectively under the pressure of deadlines, unexpected developments, changes in project scope, unforeseen issues from the field and demands on time for work assignments
    • Must have strong interpersonal skills and develop and maintain relationships across FE, with outside firms and manufacturers that further facilitate the cooperation needed to complete assigned tasks and that will inspire others to achieve, or exceed, goals.
    • Must be able to work independently as well as in teams to coordinate designs with other FirstEnergy areas of responsibility including Planning and Protection, Project Management, Maintenance, Real Estate and Construction, as well as the Regional operating companies. -
    • Ability to make practical recommendations without undue delay and based on the best information available at the time that the decision must be made.
    • Must be able to communicate effectively with good verbal skills and writing skills, providing comprehensive project status reports, clear and concise correspondence, and accurate information.
    • Must possess strong organizational, computer, and problem-solving skills.
    • Must be willing to travel throughout the service territory when needed to support substation walkdowns to gather site information and to support storm response needs.
