qualified Med/Surg RN in Weirton, West Virginia, 26062! Pay

Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Medical Surgical

travelers Description: Unit has 48 beds. Nurse to patient ratios
are 1:5-7 on days and 1:6-8 on nights. Required certifications
include BLS and RN License. Candidates can take a PCT class to
become a PCT or can have CNA certification. Common diagnoses/types
of patients include pneumonia, UTI, altered mental status, GI
bleed, alcohol withdrawal, and falls/weakness. RNs are required to
titrate drips with exceptions, but no cardiac drip titration.
Common titratable and/or set rate drips include heparin, bumex, and
lasix. There are two charge nurses on day shift who will take a
patient assignment. At night, if only one charge nurse is
scheduled, they do not take an assignment. There are nurse
aides/patient care techs on this unit with a ratio of 1:10-12 on
average, which could be higher. Job duties include taking vitals,
blood glucose monitoring, EKGs, applying heart monitors, bathing,
feeding, toileting, and turning and positioning patients.
Respiratory therapy will administer breathing treatments, inhalers,
ABGs, and manage respiratory equipment such as BiPAP, CPAP, and
high flow oxygen. RNs are typically not required to do anything
except monitor the respiratory equipment. A monitor tech is located
on a different level, reads and monitors the telemetry of all
patients, and will call if there is a problem with the monitor.
Nurses are not expected to read and interpret telemetry strips.
Shifts are from 7 AM to 7 PM for RNs and from 6 AM to 6 PM for
CNAs. There is no self-scheduling or block scheduling. The schedule
is managed by the supervisor who will work with staff regarding any
requested time off. Travelers are expected to be flexible and help
fill gaps in the permanent schedule. There is a weekend requirement
of every other weekend. Staff may be asked to participate in the
holiday rotation. Floating to other medical-surgical units for
lower acuity patients may occur. Scrubs are navy blue for RNs and
ceil blue for PCTs. Duration of unit/department specific
orientation is 1 day with an educator and 1 day with a preceptor.
Charting system is Cerner Corporation - Soarian. BSN is not
