Save Education - High School Diploma or GED Skills - VoIP - Schematics - Driver's License This is highly skilled work in municipal communications. An employee in this class works individually or in a leader capacity installing, maintaining, and repairing all facets of the City's telephone system and other communications equipment. Works under the general supervision of the Communications Supervisor exercising considerable independent judgment in carrying out duties and responsibilities. Characteristic Work Works with others to evaluate projects to determine the services and equipment needed for installation. Installs and maintains telephone, video, alarm, data outlets, connectors, distribution and station cables such as twisted pair, coax, and fiber optics at each level of building in order to install various distribution frames and auxiliary equipment for voice, data, alarm, paging and video services. Designs, constructs and installs various distribution frames and auxiliary equipment for voice, data, alarm, paging and video services. Installs, maintains, and repairs various voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and video over internet protocol (video over IP) and electronic components i.e., video, paging, ringers, modems and key telephone systems which may require working from lers, bucket trucks or scaffolding. Uses computer terminal or laptop to make changes, backups, inquiries, itions and deletions to VoIP, video, and key phone systems. Generates telephone billing, and traffic and maintenance information. Prepares and maintains a variety of manual and computerized records, reports and maps. Responds to emergency calls to restore the proper functioning of communications equipment. Installs and maintains voice processing equipment. Troubleshoots, isolates and repairs or arranges for repair to emergency 911 system. Interprets PBX and VoIP traffic and maintenance data and takes corrective action when necessary to restore service. May assist lower level technicians during periods of unusual or heavy work activity. Inspects and maintains digitized and PBX batteries. Meters fire circuits assisting field personnel to locate underground or aerial problems. Drives to and from various job sites. Performs related work as required. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of three years of paid experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of PBX or VoIP telephone equipment or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training. THE EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT MEANS THAT YOU MAY SUBSTITUTE UP TO 50% OF PAID EXPERIENCE WITH RELATED TRAINING OR EDUCATION. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license. Thorough knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, practices, hazards, and safety precautions associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of standard and electronic key telephone systems and other communications equipment such as data, paging, video and alarm systems. Skill in the use of tools, equipment, and reference materials associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of various telephone and communication systems. Ability to work from schematic drawings. Ability to work at heights, working from lers, bucket trucks or scaffolding. Ability to effectively establish, update and maintain manual and computerized records. Ability to correctly identify color coded wire. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. List of essential job functions available upon request. Competitive Examination Process The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%. Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment. Residency and Veterans preference points will be awarded in conformance with the Akron City Charter if the candidate achieves a passing score in the competitive process. DRIVER'S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
