Job Description:

SUMMARY

The Structural Engineer is responsible for designing, developing and testing mechanical components and systems for overhead traveling cranes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Design & specification of structural components related to electric overhead traveling cranes, hoists & runway systems
Structural calculations in accordance with GWBI Design Standards
Generate layouts to determine configuration, components & to ensure compliance with all applicable design & safety standards Use GWBI standard design components where possible
Use GWBI stock material where possible
Design with GWBI standard fabrication practices in mind at all times

Create approval drawings, detailed fabrication drawings, bills of material and maintenance manuals
Manage projects from start to completion Coordinate communication between GWBI and the customer (facilitated through the sales department if necessary)
Coordinate the engineering schedule with the production schedule to ensure all project milestones and material delivery requirements are met
Keep the engineering manager informed (weekly) of project progress, delays or milestone completions
Monitor Project Cost

Interaction with customers To discuss project status as required
To discuss project requirements or approval drawings
To troubleshoot GWBI equipment in service
To discuss formally submitted inspection/analysis reports
To assist sales with technical information pertaining to equipment

Assist sales with equipment specification and sizing
Equipment troubleshooting
Manufacturing support to overcome problems encountered on the production floor pertaining to: Engineering design problems
Material availability
Fabrication/Assembly issues

Occasional site visits to perform data collections or to perform runway surveys & inspections
Knowledge of ACAD, AISC, AIST, AWS, concrete and mill building specifications
Survey new and existing crane runway systems for elevation and alignment compliance and recommended repairs
Perform mechanical calculations in accordance with GWBI Design Standards.
Coordinate the Engineering schedule with the production schedule to ensure all project milestones and material delivery requirements are met.
Monitor project costs.
Investigate equipment failures or difficulties to diagnose faulty operation and recommend remedial actions.
Provide technical customer service (facilitated through the Sales department if necessary).
Provide manufacturing support to overcome complications in production (e.g., engineering design problems, material availability, fabrication/assembly issues).
Conduct site visits as needed to perform data collections, troubleshoot equipment or to perform inspections.
Assist Sales team with equipment specification as needed.

COMPETENCIES

Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology, including applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of overhead crane related goods and services.
Knowledge of mathematic principles and their applications in engineering.
Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in the production of technical plans, blueprints, drawings, models and material specification.
Knowledge of 2D or 3D engineering design and manufacturing tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
Knowledge of finite element analysis, including the creation of models and interpretation of results.
Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques to maximize the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite programs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. - The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places and fumes or airborne particles. - The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually an office setting.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time position. Regular hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. - Additional hours may be required as needed.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in Structural/Civil engineering; 3-5 years of experience in the structural/civil engineering field; or equivalent combination of education and related experience.

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS

Registered P.E. licensed preferred
Current valid driver's license, safe driving record and reliable mode of transportation
